Why do clear phone cases turn yellow?
Most clear cases are made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or a mix of TPU and polycarbonate (PC). TPU is soft and grippy, but it’s also the part that yellows first. The main causes are:
- UV light (sunlight). This is the #1 cause. Ultraviolet rays break down the polymer chains in TPU, triggering an oxidation reaction that turns the material yellow or brown.
- Oxidation. Even without direct sun, exposure to oxygen and ozone slowly degrades the material over time.
- Skin oils, sweat, and lotions. Oils from your hands transfer to the case and accelerate discoloration.
- Heat. Heat from the phone itself, your pocket, or a hot car dashboard speeds up the chemical reactions.
- Cheap materials. Lower-grade TPU yellows much faster. Hard polycarbonate (PC) backs stay clear far longer than soft TPU frames.
How to prevent yellowing before it starts
- Buy “anti-yellowing” or UV-stabilized cases. Look for cases that specifically say anti-yellowing or UV-resistant — these are treated to resist UV damage.

- Avoid long sun exposure. Don’t leave your phone on a sunny windowsill or a hot car dashboard.

How to clean a yellowed case
- Mild dish soap + warm water. Mix a few drops of dish soap in warm water, scrub with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry. This removes surface grime and oils.
- Baking soda paste. Make a paste of baking soda and water, apply it to the yellowed areas, leave for 15–20 minutes, then scrub gently and rinse.
- Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Wipe with 70% alcohol to lift surface discoloration. Test a small area first.
- Know the limit. If the yellowing is deep — meaning the material itself has oxidized — cleaning won’t reverse it. Surface cleaning only helps with oils and light staining.
When it’s time to replace your case
